CAF President’s Message

On March 9th, I joined 180 foundation and regional association colleagues in Washington D.C. for Foundations on the Hill 2005.  Over the course of the day, Kyle Hybl, General Counsel, El Pomar Foundation, and I met with the following individuals:

* Marc Scheessele, Legislative Director for Representative Bob Beauprez;
* Libby Cantrill, LA on Tax Issues for Representative Diana DeGette;
* David Kirby, LA for Senator Ken Salazar;
* Congressman Joel Hefley and Mickey Ferrell, LA on Tax Issues;
* Senator Wayne Allard and Robin Landauer, LA on Tax Issues;
* Stan Sloss, Senior Legislative Counsel for Representative Mark Udall;
* Congressman Tom Tancredo, and Molly Miller, Senior LA;
* Brian Ross, LA on Tax Issues for Rep. Salazar.

In each meeting we discussed, in general, the current legislative atmosphere as it pertains to the philanthropic sector.  I offered an overview of the Colorado Association of Funders and organized philanthropy’s significant direct economic impact on Colorado, as well as examples of the ways in which philanthropy enhances quality of life, etc. in communities throughout the state.  I emphasized that CAF is comprised of a broad membership base with a wide diversity of philanthropic goals. Yet we all share in our dedication to effective stewardship and the accountable practice of grantmaking.  Further, I distributed the CAF Giving Study, which serves as an effective resource to familiarize our Congressional legislators with our work and the catalytic impact of philanthropy.

We received positive responses from each individual with whom we met, as well as “kudos” and support for the work of the philanthropic sector.  It was apparent that our Congressional delegates and their staff are versed with regards to the issues affecting foundations.  However, each office stressed the import of foundations keeping them apprised of the issues and provisions as legislation is introduced.

At this point in time, the Senate Finance Committee and the House Committee on Ways and Means have expressed their intentions to introduce legislation impacting the nonprofit sector in June or early July.  The Independent Sector’s Panel on the Nonprofit Sector is scheduled to release its final report in June as well. Stay tuned to CAF. In keeping with our mission to serve as an informational resource, CAF will continue to provide timely legislative updates and links to pertinent websites and reports.

Heather Carroll, CAF President

The Denver Foundation Launches Online Database to Help Nonprofits
The Denver Foundation has launched an online database containing information on more than 50 local consultants who provide a variety of services to nonprofit organizations. Nonprofits can now conduct their research within a matter of minutes and find detailed information about a particular consultant, including their experience, partial client list, examples of past work, and work philosophy. The consultants in the database have not been pre-approved by The Denver Foundation. Nonprofit organizations must do their own due diligence in hiring a consultant. However, it is a free service and is available to anyone through The Denver Foundation’s web site at www.denverfoundation.org. Consultants not already in the database can add a profile by going to the web site as well.  For more information or help with the database, please contact Grants Manager Justin Sharp at 303.300.1790 ext. 131.
